Aromasin

Aromasin (Exemestane) is an oral hormonal therapy widely used in the treatment of hormone receptor–positive breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women. Exemestane belongs to the class of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors and functions by irreversibly inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting androgens into estrogens in peripheral tissues. Since estrogen can stimulate the growth of hormone-dependent breast cancer cells, reducing estrogen levels is a key therapeutic strategy.
It is commonly prescribed as adjuvant therapy following initial treatment with tamoxifen or as treatment for advanced or metastatic breast cancer. By significantly lowering circulating estrogen levels, exemestane helps reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and slows disease progression. The drug is taken orally, usually once daily after meals, which improves its absorption.
Common side effects of Aromasin include hot flashes, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, sweating, headache, and insomnia. Long-term use may lead to bone mineral density loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Therefore, patients receiving exemestane often require bone health monitoring and may be advised to take calcium and vitamin D supplements.
