Celldemic is a quadrivalent zoonotic influenza vaccine formulated with surface proteins from the influenza A/turkey/Turkey/1/2005 (H5N1) NIBRG‑23 strain. This product contains purified haemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase surface antigens derived from inactivated H5N1 virus particles grown in cell cultures, combined with an oil‑in‑water adjuvant to enhance immune responsiveness. The inclusion of HA, the viral protein responsible for binding to host cells, helps stimulate the body’s immune system to recognise and respond to this specific strain’s viral features.
The H5N1 subtype of influenza A, also known as avian or “bird flu,” is a virus that primarily circulates among bird populations but has the potential to infect mammals, including humans, when they are exposed to infected birds or contaminated environments. Inactivated HA antigens act as a signal to the immune system, encouraging antibody production that can block viral attachment and entry into cells.
Celldemic is intended for active immunisation against the H5N1 virus in people from as young as 6 months old and above, supporting immune preparedness against this strain. It is provided as a suspension for injection in pre‑filled syringes and has been evaluated and endorsed by regulatory authorities based on data demonstrating its ability to elicit a protective antibody response.
Because influenza viruses evolve over time, vaccines like Celldemic are developed from representative strains such as the NIBRG‑23 H5N1 candidate virus to maximise the match with circulating viral antigens. Overall reactions following administration can include temporary injection site discomfort, fatigue, headache, or muscle aches, which reflect immune engagement and typically resolve within days.
When incorporated into broader public health strategies — including hygiene practices and outbreak monitoring — Celldemic supports preparedness against infections with the H5N1 subtype of influenza A virus.
