Raxibacumab is a human monoclonal antibody developed for inhalational anthrax, one of the most serious forms of Bacillus anthracis infection and a recognised bioterrorism threat. It binds the protective antigen component of anthrax toxin, blocking the toxin from entering cells.
It is indicated for the treatment of inhalational anthrax in combination with appropriate antibacterial drugs, and for prophylaxis when alternative therapies are not available or not appropriate. Because anthrax toxin can persist after bacteria are killed, toxin-neutralising antibodies complement antibiotic therapy.
