Indications & Clinical Uses
- Qvar RediHaler 40 mcg and 80 mcg (beclomethasone dipropionate HFA) is a breath-actuated inhaler -- distinct from the discontinued conventional QVAR metered-dose inhaler, which required manual coordination of a pump-and-breath action -- and is approved by the US FDA for the maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic (preventer) therapy in adults and children aged 4 years and older.
- It is manufactured and marketed by Teva Pharmaceuticals.
- Both the 40 mcg and 80 mcg strengths per actuation are available; the strength and number of daily inhalations are individualised by a healthcare provider according to asthma severity and prior inhaled-steroid use, up to a maximum of 320 mcg twice daily.
- Qvar RediHaler activates automatically as the patient breathes in, without needing to press a canister, and it is a controller (preventer) medicine only -- it is not intended to relieve an acute asthma attack and must not be used as a rescue inhaler.
Side Effects
- The most common side effects of Qvar RediHaler in patients aged 12 and older include worsening asthma symptoms, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, oral thrush (candidiasis), sinusitis, rhinitis and throat discomfort.
- Rinsing the mouth with water (without swallowing) after each use reduces the risk of oral thrush.
- There is no boxed warning on the current label.
- Rare but serious risks shared with all inhaled corticosteroids include adrenal insufficiency -- particularly in patients transferring from oral/systemic steroids, where deaths from adrenal insufficiency have occurred during such transitions -- as well as paradoxical bronchospasm immediately after dosing, hypersensitivity reactions, reduced bone mineral density, and glaucoma or cataracts with long-term use.
- Patients should seek urgent care for sudden wheeze or breathing difficulty after a dose, or for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as facial swelling or hives.
Precautions & Warnings
- Qvar RediHaler is for regular maintenance use only; a separate fast-acting reliever inhaler is still needed for sudden asthma symptoms.
- When transferring a patient from a systemic corticosteroid to Qvar RediHaler, the systemic steroid should be withdrawn gradually under medical supervision because adrenal suppression can take months to resolve, and patients need monitoring for signs of adrenal insufficiency during stress, illness or surgery.
- In children, growth velocity should be monitored periodically during long-term treatment, as inhaled corticosteroids can cause a small reduction in growth rate.
- Long-term use also carries a risk of reduced bone mineral density and of glaucoma or cataracts, so regular eye and bone health review is advisable with prolonged treatment.
- Qvar RediHaler is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to beclomethasone dipropionate or any excipient, and caution is needed in patients with active or latent respiratory infections such as tuberculosis.
Avoid Interactions
- No dedicated drug interaction studies have been conducted with Qvar RediHaler.
- As with other inhaled corticosteroids, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as ritonavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole and cobicistat) can increase systemic exposure to beclomethasone metabolites and raise the risk of systemic corticosteroid side effects, including adrenal suppression, so this combination should be used with caution and only if the benefit outweighs the risk.
- Patients switching from an oral corticosteroid to Qvar RediHaler need a supervised, gradual taper rather than an abrupt stop.
- Patients should tell their healthcare provider about all other corticosteroid-containing medicines (oral, nasal, topical or other inhaled steroids) to avoid unintentional excess steroid exposure, and must continue to carry their prescribed rescue bronchodilator, since Qvar RediHaler does not relieve acute symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Qvar RediHaler (beclomethasone dipropionate) is a breath-actuated inhaler that prevents asthma symptoms in adults and children aged 4 and over. It's taken daily as a controller medicine and does not relieve a sudden attack. It comes in 40mcg and 80mcg per-actuation strengths.
Breathe in through the mouthpiece and Qvar RediHaler releases the dose automatically -- you don't press a canister like older inhalers. It's usually taken twice daily, morning and evening. Rinse your mouth with water after each use, without swallowing, to prevent oral thrush.
Common side effects of Qvar RediHaler include throat irritation, oral thrush, sinusitis and nasal symptoms. Rinsing your mouth after each dose helps prevent thrush. Rarely it can cause adrenal problems, especially when switching from oral steroids -- seek urgent advice for unusual fatigue or weakness.
Don't use Qvar RediHaler as a rescue inhaler -- keep a separate fast-acting reliever for sudden symptoms. Avoid combining it with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors like ritonavir or itraconazole without medical advice, as they can raise steroid levels. Never stop an oral steroid abruptly when starting it.
No. Qvar RediHaler is a newer, breath-actuated device delivering the same beclomethasone dipropionate HFA medicine at the same 40mcg/80mcg strengths as the older QVAR metered-dose inhaler, which Teva has discontinued. The inhaler technique differs, so ask your provider to show you the RediHaler technique.
Yes, Qvar RediHaler is approved for children aged 4 and older, as well as adults, for asthma prevention. Long-term use can slightly slow growth in children, so height is checked periodically. It is not approved for use as a reliever inhaler at any age.
