Indications & Clinical Uses
- Refresh (carboxymethylcellulose sodium 0.5%), marketed as Refresh Tears by Allergan, an AbbVie company, is an over-the-counter artificial tear/ocular lubricant, not a prescription medicine.
- It is used for the temporary relief of burning, irritation and discomfort caused by dryness of the eye or exposure to wind or sun, and it also acts as a protectant against further irritation.
- It is suitable for adults and children as a general eye lubricant and does not treat an underlying eye disease; it simply supplements the eye's own tear film.
- Refresh Tears is also sold in a preservative-free version (Refresh Tears PF), containing the same 0.5% carboxymethylcellulose plus glycerin, for people who need frequent dosing or are sensitive to preservatives; confirm with the product carton or pharmacist which specific Refresh formulation and strength has been supplied, since the Refresh range includes several different products and concentrations.
Side Effects
- Refresh Tears is well tolerated; the most common effects are transient blurred vision immediately after instillation and mild, temporary eye irritation or stinging.
- No boxed warning applies to this over-the-counter eye lubricant.
- Stop use and consult a healthcare provider if you experience eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation of the eye, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours, since these can indicate a problem that needs assessment rather than more lubricant.
- Signs of an allergic reaction to the product, such as eyelid swelling, itching or a rash, are uncommon but should also prompt you to stop use and seek advice.
- No serious systemic side effects are expected from an ocular lubricant used as directed.
Precautions & Warnings
- Refresh Tears is for use in the eye only and is not for injection or oral use.
- To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to the eye, eyelid, fingers or any other surface, and replace the cap after use.
- If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drops unless directed otherwise by your eye care provider.
- Discard the multi-dose bottle 90 days after first opening, even if drops remain.
- If you are using other eye drops or ointments, space them a few minutes apart from Refresh Tears and ask your pharmacist about the correct order of use.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- This product does not require blood monitoring, prescription follow-up or dose titration.
Avoid Interactions
- Refresh Tears (carboxymethylcellulose sodium) has no known clinically significant systemic drug interactions, since it acts locally on the surface of the eye and is not absorbed in meaningful amounts.
- If you use other prescription eye drops, such as glaucoma medicines or drops for infection or inflammation, tell your eye care provider or pharmacist, since applying multiple eye products together can dilute or wash out an earlier dose; space different eye drops at least five minutes apart, applying a lubricant like Refresh Tears last if advised.
- There is no need to avoid food, alcohol or any other medicine because of Refresh Tears use.
- Tell your pharmacist about any other eye products you use so timing can be planned appropriately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Refresh Tears (carboxymethylcellulose sodium 0.5%) is an over-the-counter artificial tear that relieves burning, irritation and discomfort from dry eyes or exposure to wind and sun. It lubricates the eye's surface and protects against further irritation. It does not treat the underlying cause of dry eye.
Instill 1 or 2 drops of Refresh Tears into the affected eye or eyes as needed throughout the day. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface. If you wear contact lenses, remove them first unless your eye care provider says otherwise.
Refresh Tears can cause brief blurred vision right after use and occasional mild stinging or irritation. Stop use and see a healthcare provider if you get eye pain, vision changes, or redness and irritation lasting more than 72 hours, since these need assessment.
Avoid touching the bottle tip to your eye or other surfaces to prevent contamination. If you use other eye drops, space them at least five minutes apart from Refresh Tears. There are no known drug, food or alcohol interactions, since it works only on the eye's surface.
Discard the bottle 90 days after you first open it, even if drops remain, to reduce contamination risk. Store it at 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). A preservative-free version, Refresh Tears PF, is also available for people who need more frequent use.
Remove contact lenses before using Refresh Tears unless your eye care provider tells you otherwise, since preserved eye drops are not always compatible with lenses in place. Wait as advised before reinserting lenses. Ask your pharmacist which Refresh product suits contact lens wear.
