Indications & Clinical Uses

  • Trumenba is a recombinant meningococcal group B vaccine containing lipidated factor H binding protein (fHbp) from both subfamily A and subfamily B strains of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B, given as a 0.5 mL intramuscular injection.
  • It is approved in the United States for active immunization to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B in individuals 10 through 25 years of age, given as either a 2-dose series (0 and 6 months) or a 3-dose series (0, 1 to 2 months, and 6 months) depending on risk and schedule flexibility needed.
  • Trumenba does not protect against meningococcal disease caused by other serogroups (A, C, W, Y) and is given by a healthcare professional, not self-administered.
  • It is manufactured by Wyeth (a Pfizer company).

Side Effects

  • Trumenba has no boxed warning on its current US label.
  • The most common reactions, each affecting more than half of recipients, are pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache and muscle pain (myalgia); chills, joint pain and diarrhea are also reported.
  • These effects are usually mild to moderate and resolve within a few days.
  • As with any vaccine, seek urgent medical care for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, hives or a fast heartbeat shortly after the injection, and tell the vaccinator immediately if you feel faint, as fainting can follow any injection, especially in adolescents.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Trumenba is contraindicated in anyone with a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or to any vaccine component.
  • Vaccination should be postponed in anyone with moderate or severe acute illness until they recover.
  • Trumenba may not protect everyone who receives it, and it does not cover meningococcal serogroups other than B, so other recommended vaccines (e.g., MenACWY) are still needed.
  • People with weakened immune systems, including those with complement deficiencies or on complement inhibitor therapy, remain at risk of meningococcal disease despite vaccination.
  • Discuss use in pregnancy and breastfeeding with your healthcare provider, as data are limited.
  • Unopened, unused vaccine is stored refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C and must not be frozen; pre-filled syringes should be stored horizontally.

Avoid Interactions

  • Tell the vaccinating healthcare professional about all other vaccines, medicines and supplements being taken, including any immunosuppressive treatment or corticosteroids, since these can reduce the immune response to Trumenba.
  • Trumenba can be given at the same visit as other age-appropriate vaccines, but each vaccine should be injected at a separate site, generally in a different limb.
  • If Trumenba is given with other injectable vaccines or medicines, do not mix them in the same syringe.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you are receiving allergen immunotherapy or any treatment that lowers immune response, as this may reduce vaccine effectiveness.
