Indications & Clinical Uses

  • UVADEX (methoxsalen) is a photosensitizing agent used for extracorporeal photopheresis, an apheresis procedure for treating cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), mycosis fungoides, and Sézary syndrome that are unresponsive to other forms of treatment.
  • The drug is administered intravenously and exposed to UVA light outside the body before blood is returned to the patient.
  • This specialized procedure must be performed by experienced physicians with training in the THERAKOS CELLEX Photopheresis System.
  • UVADEX provides palliative treatment of skin manifestations of CTCL.

Side Effects

  • Hypotension from volume changes occurs in more than 1% of patients.
  • Serious cardiovascular events including arrhythmias and infections have been reported.
  • Other adverse reactions include nausea, photosensitivity reactions, fever, and hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis.
  • Serious events related to the photopheresis procedure itself can occur.
  • Patients must wear UVA-absorbing wrap-around sunglasses and cover exposed skin for 24 hours after each treatment.

Precautions & Warnings

  • UVADEX is contraindicated in patients with photosensitive diseases (lupus erythematosus, porphyria cutanea tarda, xeroderma pigmentosum, albinism), aphakia, or hypersensitivity to methoxsalen.
  • Severe photosensitivity is a major concern: patients must strictly avoid sun exposure and use UVA-protective sunglasses for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Risk of premature skin aging and skin cancer increases with treatment.
  • Cataract formation from UVA exposure is possible.
  • Pregnancy may result in fetal harm.

Avoid Interactions

  • UVADEX interacts with concomitant photosensitizing agents including anthralin, coal tar, griseofulvin, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, and certain dyes.
  • These agents increase photosensitivity reactions and should be avoided during treatment.
  • Inform your physician of all medications, especially those that may increase sun sensitivity.
  • Avoid herbal supplements like St. John's Wort that increase photosensitivity.
