Indications & Clinical Uses
- VABYSMO (faricimab-svoa) is a monoclonal antibody indicated for intravitreal injection to treat patients with neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), and macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO).
- Faricimab blocks VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and ANG-2 (angiopoietin-2), reducing abnormal blood vessel growth and fluid accumulation in the retina.
- VABYSMO is administered as a 6 mg intravitreal injection by a qualified physician directly into the eye.
- Treatment is monthly for initial doses, then adjusted based on clinical response.
- Approved by FDA and EMA.
Side Effects
- The most common side effects are cataract (15%) and conjunctival hemorrhage (8%).
- Other reported adverse reactions include vitreous detachment, floaters, transient eye pain and irritation, and increased intraocular pressure.
- Serious but rare effects include endophthalmitis (eye infection), retinal detachment, retinal vasculitis with vascular occlusion, and arterial thromboembolic events.
- Monitor for eye pain, vision loss, redness, or floaters.
- Report any of these symptoms to your eye doctor immediately.
Precautions & Warnings
- VABYSMO is contraindicated in patients with ocular or periocular infections, active intraocular inflammation, or hypersensitivity to faricimab or excipients.
- After injection, monitor closely for endophthalmitis symptoms including pain, redness, and vision loss within 60 minutes.
- Transient increases in intraocular pressure can occur within 60 minutes; monitor and treat if necessary.
- Retinal vasculitis or vascular occlusion has been reported; discontinue if occurs.
- VEGF inhibition carries thromboembolic risk; caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.
Avoid Interactions
- No specific systemic drug interactions have been documented with VABYSMO.
- However, because it is injected directly into the eye, concomitant intravitreal medications should only be used with caution and appropriate spacing of injections.
- If using other eye medications, inform your ophthalmologist.
- No food or systemic drug interactions are known, but always discuss all medications with your healthcare provider before eye injections.

Frequently Asked Questions
Vabysmo (faricimab-svoa) is a monoclonal antibody injected directly into the eye to treat wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and macular edema from retinal vein occlusion. It blocks two inflammatory proteins (VEGF and ANG-2) that cause abnormal blood vessel growth and fluid accumulation in the retina, reducing vision loss.
Vabysmo is injected directly into the eye at baseline and then monthly for the first 4 to 6 months depending on the condition. Each injection delivers 6 mg (0.05 mL of 120 mg/mL solution). After initial treatment, the injection frequency may be adjusted to every 8 to 12 weeks based on your clinical response and tolerability.
Common side effects are cataracts (15%) and conjunctival hemorrhage (8%). Other effects include floaters, eye pain, and increased eye pressure. Rare serious effects include eye infection (endophthalmitis), retinal detachment, vascular occlusion, and systemic thromboembolic events. Report vision changes, severe eye pain, redness, or flashing lights immediately to your eye doctor.
Do not use Vabysmo if you have active eye infection or intraocular inflammation. Avoid in cases of documented allergy to faricimab or excipients. Discuss cardiovascular disease with your doctor as it increases thromboembolic risk from VEGF inhibition. Monitor blood pressure regularly. Inform your ophthalmologist about all medications and health conditions.
Your ophthalmologist injects 6 mg directly into the eye using sterile technique. Watch carefully for endophthalmitis symptoms (pain, redness, vision loss) for 60 minutes after injection. Transient eye pressure increase may occur within 60 minutes. Report any severe eye pain or sudden vision loss immediately. Some floaters or mild irritation is normal after injection.
Store Vabysmo refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze the medication. Keep in the original carton protected from light. Vabysmo may remain at room temperature (20-25°C) for up to 24 hours before injection if needed. Each pre-filled syringe is single-use only for a single eye injection.
