Indications & Clinical Uses
- Xalatan 0.005% eye drops (the sheet lists 0.01%, which does not match the label) contain latanoprost, a prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue, and are used to lower raised pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
- The usual dose is one drop in the affected eye or eyes once daily in the evening.
- The 2.5 mL multi-dose bottle contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride.
- Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
- Xalatan is prescribed by a healthcare provider and used by the patient at home.
- The US label information is used here; the US label was originally issued by Pfizer and the most recent DailyMed listing is held by Viatris Specialty LLC.
- Xalatan should not be combined with another prostaglandin eye drop.
Side Effects
- In clinical trials the most common reactions, seen in about 5% to 15% of patients, were blurred vision, burning and stinging, redness of the white of the eye (conjunctival hyperaemia), a feeling of something in the eye, itching, increased brown pigmentation of the iris, and punctate keratitis (tiny surface marks on the cornea).
- Eyelashes may gradually become longer, thicker and more numerous, which is usually reversible when treatment stops.
- Iris colour change develops slowly over months to years and may be permanent.
- Less common but serious problems include eye inflammation, swelling of the central retina (macular oedema), reactivation of herpes infection of the cornea, and bacterial eye infection from a contaminated bottle.
- There is no boxed warning.
- Contact your healthcare provider promptly for eye pain, marked redness, discharge or sudden changes in vision.
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not use Xalatan if you are allergic to latanoprost, benzalkonium chloride or any ingredient.
- The permanent darkening of the iris is a recognised effect, so regular eye check-ups matter.
- Use caution if you have eye inflammation, risk factors for macular oedema, or a history of herpetic keratitis.
- Remove contact lenses before instilling the drops and wait 15 minutes before putting them back, because benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed by lenses.
- Keep the bottle tip from touching the eye or any surface.
- There are no adequate studies in pregnant women and animal studies showed harm, so tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy; it is not known whether latanoprost passes into breast milk.
- Unopened bottles are stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C, protected from light; an opened bottle may be kept at up to 25°C for 6 weeks.
Avoid Interactions
- Increase in risk or reduced benefit: the label advises against using Xalatan together with other prostaglandin or prostaglandin-analogue eye drops, so tell your healthcare provider about every eye drop you use.
- If you use other topical eye medicines, put them in at least 5 minutes apart from Xalatan.
- Contact lenses can absorb the preservative benzalkonium chloride, so remove lenses first and wait 15 minutes before reinserting them.
- The label reviewed does not list other specific drug interactions or foods to avoid, and no medicine is named that reduces the effect of Xalatan.
- Always tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, non-prescription products and supplements you take, including any other eye treatments.

It is a prostaglandin analogue prescribed by a healthcare provider and used at home. The US label states that safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
Put one drop of Xalatan (latanoprost) into the affected eye or eyes once daily in the evening. Take out contact lenses first and wait 15 minutes before putting them back. If you use other eye drops, leave at least 5 minutes between them. Keep the bottle tip away from your eye and fingers.
The most common Xalatan (latanoprost) side effects, seen in about 5% to 15% of people, are blurred vision, burning or stinging, red eyes, itching, a feeling of something in the eye and darker iris colour. Eyelashes may grow longer and thicker. Tell your healthcare provider about eye pain, marked redness or sudden vision changes.
Avoid using another prostaglandin eye drop together with Xalatan (latanoprost), as the label advises against combining them. Do not wear contact lenses when putting the drops in, because the preservative benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed by lenses. Never let the bottle tip touch your eye or any surface.
Store unopened Xalatan (latanoprost) bottles in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C and protect them from light. Once opened, a bottle can be kept at room temperature up to 25°C for up to 6 weeks. Do not let the tip touch your eye, because contaminated bottles can cause eye infections.
Yes. Xalatan (latanoprost) can gradually increase brown pigmentation of the iris over months to years, and this change may be permanent. Eyelash changes are usually reversible after stopping. Your eye specialist can monitor any change at regular check-ups, and you should report new colour changes promptly.
