Activelle (Norethisterone Acetate, Estradiol) is a continuous combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to relieve menopausal symptoms in women with an intact uterus. It contains two hormones: estradiol, a form of estrogen identical to that produced naturally by the ovaries, and norethisterone acetate, a progestogen that protects the uterine lining from estrogen-induced overgrowth.
It is primarily prescribed for the management of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and sleep disturbances that occur due to estrogen deficiency after menopause. By restoring estrogen levels, Activelle helps improve overall quality of life and daily functioning in postmenopausal women. The addition of norethisterone acetate reduces the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, making it suitable for women who have not undergone hysterectomy.
The medication is taken orally, usually as one tablet daily, without breaks, providing continuous hormone support. Because it is a continuous combined therapy, it generally minimizes withdrawal bleeding over time, which is beneficial for long-term use. Activelle may also contribute to the prevention of osteoporosis by maintaining bone mineral density in postmenopausal women at risk of fractures, particularly when other treatments are unsuitable.
Like all hormone therapies, Activelle should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary. Potential side effects may include breast tenderness, headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or spotting, especially during the initial months of treatment. It may not be suitable for women with a history of hormone-dependent cancers, thromboembolic disorders, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
Regular medical follow-up is recommended during treatment to assess benefits, risks, and ongoing suitability. Activelle should always be used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
