Indications & Clinical Uses

  • Iyuzeh is a preservative-free latanoprost 0.005% (50 micrograms per mL) sterile eye drop, a prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue that lowers pressure inside the eye by increasing the outflow of fluid.
  • It is approved in the United States to reduce raised intraocular pressure in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, and patients use it themselves at home.
  • It comes in translucent single-dose containers of 0.2 mL, packed five to a foil pouch and thirty containers to a carton.
  • The usual dose is one drop into the affected eye or eyes once daily in the evening; using it more often can make it work less well.
  • Pressure starts to fall about 3 to 4 hours after a drop, with the greatest effect 8 to 12 hours later.
  • The catalogue lists 0.01%, but the approved strength is 0.005%.
  • Safety in children has not been established.

Side Effects

  • The commonest Iyuzeh side effects, reported in 5% to 35% of people, are redness of the white of the eye (conjunctival hyperaemia, 34%), eye irritation (19%), itchy eyes (15%), an abnormal sensation in the eye (14%), a feeling of something in the eye (12%), blurred vision (7%) and watery eyes (5%).
  • Latanoprost can gradually and permanently change the colour of the iris, turning blue-brown, grey-brown, green-brown or yellow-brown eyes more brown, which is most noticeable when only one eye is treated.
  • The skin of the eyelid may darken, usually reversibly, and eyelashes often become longer, thicker, darker and more numerous.
  • Iyuzeh carries NO boxed warning.
  • Tell your healthcare provider promptly about eye pain, marked redness, sensitivity to light or sudden loss of vision, which can signal inflammation inside the eye or swelling of the macula.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Each Iyuzeh single-dose container is sterile only until it is opened: use it straight away, then throw it away with any solution left inside, and never keep an opened container for the next day.
  • Contact lenses must be removed before the drop and may be put back 15 minutes later.
  • If you use other eye drops, leave at least 5 minutes between them.
  • Use Iyuzeh with care if you have no natural lens or an artificial lens, a torn posterior lens capsule or other risk factors, because macular oedema has been reported; use caution with a history of herpes simplex keratitis and avoid it during an active herpetic eye infection.
  • Animal studies showed malformations and embryofetal death, so Iyuzeh is not recommended in pregnancy unless clearly needed.
  • Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established, and the change in iris colour is likely to be permanent.

Avoid Interactions

  • Do not combine Iyuzeh with another prostaglandin or prostaglandin analogue eye drop such as bimatoprost, travoprost or tafluprost: the label says using two or more prostaglandins together is not recommended, and it may raise eye pressure instead of lowering it.
  • Eye drops preserved with thimerosal can react with latanoprost and form a precipitate in the eye, so leave at least 5 minutes between Iyuzeh and any other eye drop or ointment.
  • No important interactions with tablets or capsules are listed on the label, but tell your healthcare provider about every medicine, eye drop, herbal product and supplement you use, including anything bought without a prescription.
  • Because Iyuzeh contains no preservative it is often chosen for people who react to benzalkonium chloride, but it still must not be mixed with another product.
  • Wash your hands first and never let the container tip touch your eye.
