Indications & Clinical Uses
- Lumigan 0.01% eye drops contain bimatoprost 0.1 mg per mL, a prostaglandin analogue that lowers pressure inside the eye by increasing the outflow of aqueous fluid.
- Lumigan is indicated to reduce raised intraocular pressure in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, either as first-line treatment or added to another pressure-lowering eye drop.
- It is used at home by the patient rather than in a clinic.
- Lumigan is supplied as 0.01% in 2.5 mL, 5 mL and 7.5 mL bottles; an older 0.03% strength also exists in some markets and the two are NOT interchangeable, so never substitute one for the other or assume a repeat supply is the same concentration - always check the percentage on the bottle.
- Bimatoprost at 0.03% is also sold separately for cosmetic eyelash lengthening, which is a different product and not a glaucoma treatment.
Side Effects
- The Lumigan label carries no boxed warning.
- The most common side effect is redness of the white of the eye, which affected about 31 percent of people in trials.
- Between 1 and 4 percent report conjunctival swelling, eye irritation, itchy eyes, growth of the eyelashes and blurred vision.
- Lumigan can gradually and permanently turn the coloured part of the eye browner, which is most noticeable if only one eye is treated; darkening of the eyelid skin and longer, thicker, darker lashes also occur but usually fade after stopping.
- Report promptly any eye pain, sudden drop in vision, marked light sensitivity, discharge or swelling, which may indicate inflammation inside the eye, swelling at the back of the eye or an eye infection.
- Never let the dropper tip touch your eye, fingers or any surface, because contamination can cause a serious corneal infection.
Precautions & Warnings
- Lumigan is for use in the eye only and must never be injected or swallowed.
- Use one drop in the affected eye or eyes once daily in the evening, and do not use it more often than once a day.
- Tell your provider before starting if you have had inflammation inside the eye, if you have no natural lens or an artificial lens implant, or if the back of your lens capsule is torn, because swelling of the central retina has been reported in these situations.
- The brown iris colour change is likely to be permanent, so this should be discussed before treatment, and eye pressure should be monitored regularly by an eye specialist.
- Lumigan contains benzalkonium chloride, which is absorbed by soft contact lenses; remove lenses before instilling the drop and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back.
- Vision may blur briefly after a drop, so do not drive until it clears.
- Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding with your provider.
Avoid Interactions
- Lumigan is applied to the eye and systemic drug interactions are not a major feature of the label, but local interactions matter.
- Effects may be REDUCED or unpredictable if Lumigan is combined with another prostaglandin analogue eye drop such as latanoprost, travoprost or tafluprost; do not add one without specialist advice.
- If you use more than one eye preparation, leave at least 5 minutes between them so the second drop does not wash the first out, and instil eye ointments or gels last.
- Benzalkonium chloride in the drops is taken up by soft contact lenses and can irritate the eye surface, so remove lenses first and reinsert them after 15 minutes.
- Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or lashes, and do not share the bottle.
- Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every medicine, eye drop and supplement you use, including anything bought without a prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions
Lumigan 0.01% (bimatoprost) is an eye drop that lowers raised pressure inside the eye in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It works by increasing the drainage of fluid from the eye. It can be used alone or added to another pressure-lowering drop.
Put one drop of Lumigan (bimatoprost) into the affected eye or eyes once daily in the evening. Do not use it more than once a day. If you use other eye drops, leave at least 5 minutes between them, and apply any eye ointment last.
The commonest side effect of Lumigan (bimatoprost) is red eyes, seen in about 31 percent of people. Eye irritation, itching, swelling of the conjunctiva, blurred vision and longer lashes affect 1 to 4 percent. Report eye pain, discharge or sudden vision loss straight away.
Yes, Lumigan (bimatoprost) can slowly turn the coloured part of the eye browner, and this change is likely to be permanent. Darkening of the eyelid skin and longer, thicker lashes also occur but usually fade after stopping. The change is most noticeable when only one eye is treated.
Remove soft contact lenses before using Lumigan (bimatoprost) and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back. The preservative benzalkonium chloride is absorbed by soft lenses and can irritate the eye. Never let the dropper tip touch your eye or fingers, as contamination can cause serious eye infection.
No. Lumigan 0.01% and the older 0.03% bimatoprost strength are not interchangeable, and only 0.01% appears on the current US label. Always check the percentage printed on the bottle before use. Bimatoprost 0.03% sold for cosmetic eyelash growth is a separate product, not a glaucoma treatment.
