Indications & Clinical Uses
- Pred Forte 1% eye drops contain prednisolone acetate, a potent corticosteroid used to treat steroid-responsive inflammation of the eye, including inflammation of the eyelid lining, the white of the eye, the cornea and the front part of the eye (anterior uvea), such as after eye surgery or with anterior uveitis and other non-infectious inflammatory conditions.
- Pred Forte is used in adults and is generally prescribed short-term under close eye-care supervision.
- It is applied only to the eye and is not the same as Pred Mild 0.12%, a lower-strength prednisolone acetate suspension used for milder inflammation; the two must not be substituted for each other without your prescriber's instruction.
- Pred Forte is marketed in the US by Allergan, an AbbVie company, and equivalent prednisolone acetate 1% ophthalmic suspensions are available under other brand and generic names worldwide.
Side Effects
- The most common effects of Pred Forte are transient stinging or burning right after application, and mild eye discomfort or blurred vision that usually passes quickly.
- With longer use, more serious effects can occur: raised eye pressure that can lead to glaucoma and optic nerve damage, posterior subcapsular cataract formation, delayed healing of any eye wound, and an increased risk of new or worsening eye infections because corticosteroids suppress the eye's local immune response.
- Pred Forte has no FDA boxed warning.
- Corneal or scleral thinning has occurred rarely with prolonged corticosteroid use and can, in rare cases, lead to perforation of the eye.
- Contact your eye-care provider promptly if you notice increasing eye pain, worsening redness, reduced vision, or if your symptoms have not improved after a few days of treatment; eye pressure is usually checked if you use this medicine for longer than about 10 days.
Precautions & Warnings
- Pred Forte must not be used if you have an active untreated bacterial, fungal or most viral eye infections, including herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic ulcer), chickenpox or shingles affecting the eye, or tuberculous eye disease, because corticosteroids can worsen these infections and mask their signs.
- Shake the bottle well before each use, since this is a suspension.
- If you wear soft contact lenses, check with your eye-care provider before use.
- Intraocular pressure should be checked periodically, especially if treatment continues beyond about 10 days or if you have a personal or family history of glaucoma.
- This product contains sodium bisulfite, which can rarely cause allergic-type reactions, especially in people with asthma.
- Pred Forte is for use in the eye only; never inject it or take it by mouth.
- Use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding should be discussed with your prescriber, as with any prescription eye medicine used for more than a few days.
Avoid Interactions
- There are no major systemic drug interactions expected with Pred Forte eye drops because very little prednisolone acetate is absorbed into the bloodstream when it is used correctly in the eye.
- However, using more than one eye medicine at the same time can dilute or wash out each drop, so if you are prescribed another eye drop, space the two medicines at least five to ten minutes apart, and apply this suspension last if you also use eye gels or ointments.
- Do not use other steroid-containing eye products at the same time unless your prescriber has told you to, since this can raise the risk of the pressure and infection-related side effects described above.
- Tell your eye-care provider about all eye drops, contact lens solutions and other medicines you use, and never share this bottle with another person, as the dropper tip can spread infection between users if it touches the eye.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pred Forte (prednisolone acetate 1%) is a strong steroid eye drop used to treat inflammation of the eyelid lining, the white of the eye, the cornea and the front of the eye, such as after eye surgery or with anterior uveitis. It is for adults under eye-care supervision.
Shake the bottle well, then instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye 2 to 4 times daily, or as directed. Your provider may increase frequency for the first 24-48 hours. Wash your hands first and avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye.
Pred Forte commonly causes brief stinging or burning after each drop. With longer use it can raise eye pressure, risking glaucoma, cause cataracts, delay healing, or increase infection risk. See your eye-care provider urgently for worsening pain, redness or reduced vision.
Do not use Pred Forte with an active eye infection, especially herpes simplex, chickenpox or shingles affecting the eye, since steroids can worsen these and hide warning signs. Avoid other steroid eye drops unless prescribed together, and space other eye drops five to ten minutes apart.
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, then continue your regular schedule; do not double up. If you use Pred Forte for 10 days or longer, your eye-care provider will check your eye pressure regularly to catch any steroid-related rise early.
Pred Forte is typically prescribed short-term, for the length of time your eye-care provider decides based on how the inflammation responds. Stopping suddenly is not usually a problem with eye drops, but always finish the course your provider recommends and attend follow-up checks.
