Indications & Clinical Uses
- Tekturna 150mg tablets contain aliskiren, a direct renin inhibitor, currently labeled by LXO US Inc. (formerly Noden Pharma).
- Tekturna is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adults and in children aged 6 years and older weighing at least 50kg, used alone or together with other antihypertensive medicines, to lower blood pressure.
- Tekturna is a single-ingredient product and is a different formulation from Tekturna HCT (Sr 3340), which combines aliskiren with the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide - the two are not interchangeable, and switching between them changes both the dose of aliskiren received and the addition or removal of a diuretic effect.
Side Effects
- Boxed warning: drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin system, including Tekturna, can cause injury and death to a developing fetus, particularly in the second and third trimesters - Tekturna must be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected.
- Common effects include diarrhea (more likely at higher doses), abdominal discomfort, indigestion, mild cough and rash.
- Seek urgent medical attention for facial, lip, tongue or throat swelling with difficulty breathing (angioedema/anaphylaxis), or for reduced urination, which can signal kidney problems.
Precautions & Warnings
- Tekturna is contraindicated in patients with diabetes who are also taking an ACE inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), and combining it with these drug classes generally is not recommended because of higher risk of low blood pressure, high potassium and kidney problems.
- Kidney function, blood pressure and potassium should be monitored during treatment, and caution is needed in patients with volume or salt depletion, who are at higher risk of a sudden blood-pressure drop after the first dose.
- Tekturna must be discontinued as soon as pregnancy is confirmed; discuss contraception with your healthcare provider.
Avoid Interactions
- Avoid combining Tekturna with cyclosporine or itraconazole, which significantly raise aliskiren blood levels.
- NSAIDs (including selective COX-2 inhibitors) taken with Tekturna can increase the risk of kidney impairment, especially in older adults or those who are dehydrated.
- Combining Tekturna with an ACE inhibitor or ARB (dual RAAS blockade) raises the risk of hypotension, high potassium and kidney dysfunction and is generally avoided, particularly in people with diabetes or reduced kidney function.
- Furosemide may work less well when taken with Tekturna.
- Tell your healthcare provider about every medicine and supplement you take.
Frequently Asked Questions
Tekturna (aliskiren) is a direct renin inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure in adults and children 6 years and older weighing at least 50kg. It can be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines, but not usually combined with an ACE inhibitor or ARB.
Take Tekturna once daily, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole and avoid high-fat meals close to dosing, since fatty food reduces how much aliskiren your body absorbs.
Tekturna commonly causes diarrhea, stomach discomfort, indigestion and a mild cough. It carries a boxed warning for fetal toxicity, so it must be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected; seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, a sign of angioedema.
Avoid cyclosporine and itraconazole, which raise aliskiren levels, and NSAIDs, which increase kidney-injury risk. Do not combine Tekturna with an ACE inhibitor or ARB, especially if you have diabetes, since this raises the risk of low blood pressure and high potassium.
Take a missed Tekturna dose as soon as you remember that day; if you don't remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one.
No. Tekturna contains aliskiren alone, while Tekturna HCT combines aliskiren with the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. They treat the same condition but are not interchangeable, since switching between them changes both your aliskiren dose and whether you receive a diuretic effect.
