Indications & Clinical Uses

  • Vaqta (hepatitis A vaccine, inactivated) is indicated for active immunization against hepatitis A virus infection in persons 12 months of age and older.
  • The vaccine contains inactivated hepatitis A virus (HAV), providing active immunity without risk of infection.
  • Vaqta is recommended for all children beginning at 12 months of age, with a complete series of two doses given 6 to 18 months apart.
  • It is also indicated for post-exposure prophylaxis in unvaccinated persons exposed to hepatitis A virus within 2 weeks of exposure.
  • Adults at increased risk (travelers to endemic areas, men who have sex with men, persons with chronic liver disease, injection drug users, occupational exposure) and immunocompromised individuals should receive the complete vaccination series.
  • The vaccine provides long-lasting immunity, with durability observed for at least 15 to 20 years after the complete series.

Side Effects

  • Local injection site reactions are common, with soreness, redness, or swelling occurring in 5 to 50% of recipients, typically mild and resolving within 48 hours.
  • Systemic reactions are generally mild and include fatigue, headache, malaise, and low-grade fever (under 38.3°C) occurring in 10 to 15% of vaccinees.
  • Abdominal discomfort and anorexia have been reported.
  • Serious adverse events are rare; anaphylaxis has been reported very rarely (less than 1 in 1 million doses).
  • No causal relationship has been established between Vaqta and chronic illnesses.
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome, although reported post-vaccination, has not been definitively linked to hepatitis A vaccine.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Vaqta is not indicated for persons with known anaphylaxis to hepatitis A vaccine components, including neomycin.
  • Do not administer to persons with acute febrile illness; defer vaccination until fever resolves.
  • Immunocompromised persons (HIV/AIDS, immunosuppressive therapy, hematologic malignacy) may have diminished antibody response; consult with healthcare provider regarding vaccination timing relative to immunosuppressive treatment or CD4 count.
  • Live attenuated vaccines (MMR, varicella, rotavirus, live attenuated influenza) should not be given within 4 weeks before or after Vaqta, or may be given simultaneously at different injection sites.
  • Inactivated vaccines may be given simultaneously or at any time before or after Vaqta.
  • Pregnancy category A—no evidence of fetal risk, but generally defer non-urgent vaccination until after first trimester.
  • Breastfeeding is not a contraindication.

Avoid Interactions

  • Do not give live attenuated vaccines (MMR, varicella, rotavirus, live attenuated influenza vaccine) within 4 weeks before or after Vaqta administration; separate by at least 4 weeks or administer on the same day at different anatomic sites.
  • Inactivated vaccines, including influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, do not interact with Vaqta and may be given simultaneously or at any interval.
  • Immune globulin (IG) or hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) given at the same visit may reduce hepatitis A vaccine response; if IG or HBIG is given, wait at least 3 to 11 months before administering Vaqta, depending on IG dose.
  • Antivirals for hepatitis or influenza do not contraindicate Vaqta.
  • Inform healthcare providers about recent receipt of blood products or IG when scheduling Vaqta vaccination.
