Indications & Clinical Uses
- Nutropin AQ (somatropin) 10 mg/2 mL is a ready-to-use liquid form of recombinant human growth hormone, supplied in a pre-filled cartridge for use with a reusable injection pen — a different, ready-to-inject presentation from the original Nutropin lyophilised powder, which must be reconstituted before use.
- It is approved in the United States for growth failure in children due to growth hormone deficiency, idiopathic short stature, Turner syndrome, or chronic kidney disease persisting up to the time of renal transplant, and for growth hormone deficiency that begins in childhood or continues into, or starts in, adulthood.
- Genentech discontinued the separate Nutropin AQ NuSpin auto-injector devices in the United States from 31 December 2024 for business reasons unrelated to safety or quality; the 10 mg/2 mL pen-cartridge presentation described here is a different device format and was not part of that discontinuation.
- Nutropin AQ is self-injected at home by the patient or a trained caregiver.
Side Effects
- The most common side effects of Nutropin AQ are reactions at the injection site, such as redness, itching or a lump, and in adults, fluid retention causing swelling, joint and muscle aches, and tingling or numbness in the hands from carpal tunnel-type pressure.
- Nutropin AQ carries no boxed warning.
- Rare but serious reactions include raised pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension), which can cause headache, vision changes, nausea or vomiting and needs prompt medical review, and can occur at any time during treatment.
- Growth hormone can unmask or worsen diabetes, so periodic blood glucose checks are advised.
- In children, existing curvature of the spine (scoliosis) may progress faster during rapid growth, and hip problems can develop.
- Childhood cancer survivors previously treated with radiation to the brain have a small increased risk of a second tumour.
- Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, which can signal pancreatitis, or for sudden vision changes.
Precautions & Warnings
- Nutropin AQ must not be used in anyone with an active or suspected tumour, in acute critical illness after major surgery, multiple trauma or serious breathing failure, or in children with Prader-Willi syndrome who are severely obese or have breathing problems, since growth hormone has been linked to sudden death in this group.
- It is contraindicated in active proliferative or severe non-proliferative diabetic eye disease and in children whose growth plates have already closed.
- Thyroid function should be checked periodically, since untreated hypothyroidism blunts the response to treatment, and blood glucose should be monitored throughout, particularly in people with diabetes or a family history of it.
- Growing children need regular spinal checks for scoliosis.
- Nutropin AQ is given by subcutaneous injection only, never intravenously.
- Store cartridges refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C, protected from light, and discard 28 days after first use; do not freeze and never share a pen or cartridge between patients.
Avoid Interactions
- Oral oestrogens, including combined contraceptive pills, can reduce the growth-promoting effect of Nutropin AQ, so your prescriber may need to increase the dose; tell them if you start or stop oestrogen treatment.
- Glucocorticoid (steroid) medicines can blunt the growth response if taken at the same time and should be adjusted carefully by your healthcare provider.
- Nutropin AQ can unmask a previously unrecognised lack of cortisol reserve, so people already taking hydrocortisone or another glucocorticoid replacement may need their dose reviewed.
- Insulin and other diabetes medicines may need adjusting, because growth hormone can raise blood sugar.
- Drugs cleared by cytochrome P450 liver enzymes, such as certain anticonvulsants, ciclosporin and sex steroids, may be metabolised faster during treatment, so their levels or effect should be monitored.
- Tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist about every prescription and over-the-counter medicine and supplement you use before starting Nutropin AQ, and do not mix it with other injectable products in the same syringe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Nutropin AQ (somatropin) is a ready-to-use liquid growth hormone injection used in children with growth failure from growth hormone deficiency, Turner syndrome, chronic kidney disease or short stature of unknown cause, and in adults with growth hormone deficiency. Unlike original Nutropin powder, it needs no mixing before injecting.
Nutropin AQ is injected under the skin using a pre-filled cartridge and pen device, usually once daily, by the patient or a trained caregiver. It is ready to use straight from the cartridge — never inject it into a vein, and rotate the injection site each time.
The most common effects are injection-site reactions and, in adults, fluid retention with joint or muscle aches and hand tingling. Rarely, it raises pressure inside the skull, causing headache and vision changes — get medical help if these occur. It can also unmask diabetes or worsen scoliosis in children.
Avoid starting or stopping oral oestrogen without telling your prescriber, since it changes how much Nutropin AQ you need. Diabetes medicines may need adjusting, as growth hormone can raise blood sugar. Never use Nutropin AQ if you have an active tumour, and tell your prescriber about all other medicines.
The Nutropin AQ NuSpin auto-injector devices were discontinued in the US from 31 December 2024 for business reasons, not safety. The pen-cartridge presentation, such as the 10 mg/2 mL cartridge, is a separate device format and was not part of that discontinuation — check current availability with your pharmacy.
Keep Nutropin AQ cartridges refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C, protected from light, and do not freeze. Once a cartridge is first used, discard it after 28 days, even if it still contains solution. Never share a pen or cartridge with another person.
