Indications & Clinical Uses
- Rhopressa (netarsudil ophthalmic solution) 0.02% is a Rho kinase inhibitor eye drop FDA-approved in the United States (2017) for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
- It is given as one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
- Rhopressa was originally developed by Aerie Pharmaceuticals; the current US labeler, following Alcon's acquisition of Aerie, is Alcon Laboratories, Inc.
- The identical active substance and strength (netarsudil 0.02%) is marketed in the European Union under the brand name Rhokiinsa (Sr 2960) - this has now been confirmed directly against FDA and EMA sources as a genuine regional brand-name pair for the same medicine, not a different formulation.
Side Effects
- Conjunctival hyperemia (eye redness) is very common with Rhopressa, occurring in about 53% of patients in clinical trials, and led about 6% of patients to stop treatment.
- Other common effects, each in roughly 20% of patients, include corneal verticillata (small corneal deposits), instillation-site pain, and conjunctival hemorrhage.
- Rhopressa carries no boxed warning.
- Epithelial (reticular) corneal edema has been reported, particularly in people with pre-existing corneal stromal edema or compromised corneal endothelium, and usually resolves after stopping treatment.
- Bacterial keratitis has been associated with contaminated multidose eye drop containers; seek prompt medical attention for eye pain, worsening redness, light sensitivity, or a change in vision.
Precautions & Warnings
- Rhopressa is for topical ophthalmic use only.
- Use caution if you have pre-existing corneal stromal edema or a compromised corneal endothelium, since epithelial corneal edema has occurred in this group.
- To reduce the risk of contamination and bacterial keratitis, avoid letting the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelid or any other surface, and keep the bottle capped when not in use.
- If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before instilling Rhopressa and you may reinsert them 15 minutes later.
- Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, as data in these situations are limited.
Avoid Interactions
- No formal drug-interaction studies have been conducted with Rhopressa, and no specific drug classes are identified as reducing its intraocular pressure-lowering effect.
- If more than one topical ophthalmic medicine is being used, separate each product by at least five minutes to prevent one drop washing out another, and if an eye ointment is also prescribed, apply it last, after all eye drops.
- Tell your eye doctor and pharmacist about all other eye drops, ointments and medicines you use, prescription and over-the-counter, including any other glaucoma treatments, so effects on eye surface irritation, redness or pressure control can be monitored appropriately at follow-up visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Rhopressa (netarsudil 0.02%) is an eye drop that lowers raised pressure inside the eye in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is a Rho kinase inhibitor, prescribed by an eye specialist and given once daily.
Instil one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Remove soft contact lenses first and wait about 15 minutes before reinserting them. Avoid letting the dropper tip touch your eye or any surface.
About half of users get eye redness (conjunctival hyperemia), usually mild. Around 1 in 5 get small corneal deposits, instillation-site pain, or eye surface bleeding. Report worsening eye pain, light sensitivity or vision changes to your eye doctor.
Do not let the bottle tip touch your eye or other surfaces, which can contaminate the drops and cause a serious eye infection. If using other eye drops, space them at least 5 minutes apart, and tell your eye doctor about every eye product you use.
Store Rhopressa refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C before opening. After opening, it may be kept between 2°C and 25°C for up to 6 weeks, or kept refrigerated until the expiry date; do not use it once that storage window has passed.
Yes. Rhopressa (US) and Rhokiinsa (EU) both contain netarsudil 0.02% at the identical dose and once-daily schedule. They are the same medicine sold under different brand names in different regions, confirmed by FDA and EMA product documentation.
