Indications & Clinical Uses

  • Tazorac Cream 0.1% contains tazarotene, a topical retinoid applied once daily, usually in the evening, to a clean, dry area of skin.
  • It is approved in the United States for the topical treatment of plaque psoriasis of up to 20% of body surface area in adults, and for acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older, using a thin, pea-sized amount over the affected area.
  • The 0.1% cream is a stronger concentration than the 0.05% strength also sold under the Tazorac name for psoriasis, so patients should confirm which strength their healthcare provider has prescribed.
  • Tazorac is a prescription-only medicine for self-application at home and is not intended for eczema, sunburned, or broken skin, and is not approved for acne in children under 12 or for psoriasis in children under 18.

Side Effects

  • Tazorac Cream has no boxed warning, but local skin reactions are very common, affecting roughly 10 to 30% of patients, including dryness, scaling, redness, burning, itching, and peeling at the application site, usually within the first weeks of treatment.
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight and sunburn risk is also common.
  • Less frequent reactions (1 to 5%) include stinging and worsening irritation.
  • Severe irritation may require reducing application frequency or a short break from treatment.
  • Seek medical advice if you experience severe blistering, swelling, or signs of an allergic reaction such as widespread rash or difficulty breathing.
  • Because tazarotene is a retinoid, contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes should be avoided and rinsed promptly if it occurs.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Tazarotene can cause birth defects if used during pregnancy and must not be used by anyone who is or may become pregnant; a negative pregnancy test within two weeks before starting and use of effective contraception during treatment are required, and treatment should stop immediately if pregnancy occurs.
  • Tazorac should not be applied to eczematous skin, and use should be limited when combined with other irritating products such as strong soaps, astringents, or other acne or psoriasis treatments, which can compound irritation.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure, sunlamps, and tanning beds, and use sunscreen and protective clothing during treatment.
  • It is for external skin use only and must never be used in the eyes, mouth, or vagina.
  • Breastfeeding mothers should discuss use with their healthcare provider.

Avoid Interactions

  • No formal drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted with Tazorac Cream, and one study found no effect of systemic tazarotene exposure on oral contraceptive levels.
  • However, using Tazorac together with other topical products that dry or irritate the skin - including medicated or abrasive cleansers, products containing high concentrations of alcohol, astringents, spices, or lime, and other retinoids such as tretinoin or adapalene - can increase irritation and should generally be avoided unless directed by a healthcare provider.
  • Photosensitising medicines may add to Tazorac's sun-sensitivity effect.
  • Always tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist about every prescription and over-the-counter product, including other acne or psoriasis treatments, before starting Tazorac.
