Indications & Clinical Uses
- Ventolin HFA 90mcg is a metered-dose inhaler containing albuterol sulfate, a short-acting beta-2 agonist bronchodilator, delivering 108 mcg of albuterol sulfate (equal to 90 mcg albuterol base) per actuation from the mouthpiece, with 200 actuations per inhaler.
- In the US it is approved for patients aged 4 years and older to treat or prevent bronchospasm in reversible obstructive airway disease and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.
- It is a self-administered reliever inhaler with a dose counter.
- Outside the US the same molecule is sold as salbutamol, for example Ventolin Evohaler 100 micrograms in the UK, which has a different labelled strength and should not be treated as interchangeable on paper.
- Ventolin HFA is a US brand of GlaxoSmithKline LLC.
Side Effects
- The most common side effects in clinical trials (3% or more) are throat irritation (about 10%), viral respiratory infection (7%), upper respiratory inflammation (5%), cough (5%) and musculoskeletal pain (5%).
- Serious effects include life-threatening paradoxical bronchospasm, where breathing worsens right after a dose, cardiovascular effects such as fast heartbeat and ECG changes, low potassium, blood glucose changes and immediate allergic reactions.
- Excessive use can be dangerous.
- The label has no boxed warning.
- Stop using the inhaler and get emergency help if wheezing or breathlessness gets worse straight after a dose, or if your usual dose stops giving relief.
Precautions & Warnings
- Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to albuterol sulfate or any ingredient of Ventolin HFA.
- Paradoxical bronchospasm needs immediate treatment.
- Beta-agonists can affect the heart, so tell your provider if you have heart disease, high blood pressure or a rhythm problem; they can also lower potassium and change blood sugar.
- Ventolin HFA does not replace a corticosteroid.
- Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding with your provider, since data are limited; the label notes low blood levels in breast milk after inhalation.
- Prime before first use.
- Discard the inhaler when the dose counter reads 000, because the correct amount of medicine cannot be assured afterwards.
- Store at 20°C to 25°C (excursions 15°C to 30°C).
Avoid Interactions
- Medicines that increase risk or effect: other sympathomimetic (adrenaline-like) medicines should not be used at the same time; diuretics can worsen ECG changes and low potassium; tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors can increase albuterol effects on blood vessels.
- Medicines that reduce efficacy: beta-blockers can block the bronchodilating effect and may cause severe bronchospasm in people with asthma.
- Digoxin levels can fall by about 16% to 22% when taken with albuterol, so digoxin levels may need monitoring.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without checking with your provider.
- Tell your provider about all prescription medicines, non-prescription products and supplements you use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ventolin HFA (albuterol sulfate) is a quick-relief inhaler that treats and prevents bronchospasm in people aged 4 and older with reversible obstructive airway disease. It also prevents exercise-induced bronchospasm. Each puff delivers 90 mcg of albuterol base, and the inhaler holds 200 puffs.
Prime the Ventolin HFA inhaler before first use, then inhale one puff at a time through the mouthpiece as your healthcare provider prescribes. Watch the dose counter, which counts down with each puff. Read the Instructions for Use that come with your inhaler for the correct technique.
Common Ventolin HFA side effects are throat irritation, viral respiratory infections, upper respiratory inflammation, cough and musculoskeletal pain. Serious effects include paradoxical bronchospasm (worse wheezing right after a dose), fast heartbeat, low potassium and allergic reactions. There is no boxed warning. Get emergency help if breathing worsens.
Avoid using other adrenaline-like (sympathomimetic) medicines at the same time as Ventolin HFA. Beta-blockers can block albuterol and cause severe bronchospasm, and diuretics can worsen low potassium. Do not use it if you are allergic to albuterol sulfate, and do not use more than prescribed.
Throw away your Ventolin HFA inhaler when the dose counter reads 000, because the correct dose can no longer be assured even though spray may still come out. The counter starts at 204 and counts down with each puff. Store the inhaler at 20°C to 25°C.
Ventolin HFA (albuterol sulfate) is approved in the US for children aged 4 years and older. It is not approved for younger children. Younger children are outside the approved age range. The inhaler is approved to treat and prevent bronchospasm and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm in this age group. Your healthcare provider decides the dose.
