Indications & Clinical Uses
- Viagra 100mg is a tablet containing sildenafil citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, used to treat erectile dysfunction in adult men.
- It is taken by mouth as needed, about 1 hour before sexual activity (anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours before), and no more than once a day.
- The recommended starting dose is 50 mg, which can be raised to a maximum of 100 mg or lowered to 25 mg depending on effectiveness and tolerability.
- The 100 mg tablet is the highest strength and is not a starting dose for most men; a 25 mg starting dose is considered for men over 65 and those with severe kidney or liver impairment or taking certain CYP3A4 inhibitors.
- Viagra is not indicated for use in women.
- Sildenafil is also sold under other brand names and strengths for other conditions (for example Revatio), which must not be interchanged with Viagra.
- In the US the label names Viatris Specialty LLC as distributor.
Side Effects
- The most common side effects (reported in at least 2% of men) are headache (16%), flushing (10%), indigestion or dyspepsia (7%), nasal congestion (4%), abnormal vision (3%), back pain (2%), dizziness (2%) and rash (2%).
- Serious events need urgent medical help: an erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism), sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, which may be a sign of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), and sudden decrease or loss of hearing.
- Heart attack, sudden cardiac death, ventricular arrhythmia and stroke have been reported after marketing.
- The current US Viagra label has no boxed warning.
- Stop sexual activity and seek emergency help if you have chest pain, dizziness or nausea during sex, and report sudden vision or hearing changes immediately.
Precautions & Warnings
- Viagra must never be used with nitrates or nitrites in any form (a serious fall in blood pressure can occur), with the guanylate cyclase stimulator riociguat, or by anyone allergic to sildenafil or any tablet ingredient.
- Your heart health should be assessed before treatment because sexual activity puts strain on the heart.
- The safety of Viagra in people with bleeding disorders or active peptic ulcers is unknown.
- The safety and efficacy of combining Viagra with other erectile dysfunction treatments have not been studied.
- A 25 mg starting dose is advised for men over 65 and for severe kidney or hepatic impairment.
- Viagra is not indicated for women and offers no protection against sexually transmitted infections or HIV.
- A high-fat meal slows the onset of effect.
- Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.
Avoid Interactions
- Medicines that increase the effect or toxicity of Viagra: ritonavir (limit to 25 mg in 48 hours), and CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, saquinavir and erythromycin (consider a 25 mg starting dose).
- Alpha-blockers (start at 25 mg), amlodipine (an extra average blood pressure fall of about 8/7 mmHg) and other blood pressure medicines add to the blood pressure-lowering effect.
- Never combine Viagra with nitrates in any form or with riociguat.
- Moderate alcohol did not increase the blood pressure effect in label studies.
- Foods and drugs that reduce efficacy: the sections reviewed did not identify specific medicines; a high-fat meal delays how quickly Viagra starts to work.
- Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements, including any other erectile dysfunction treatment, before taking Viagra.

Frequently Asked Questions
Viagra (sildenafil) treats erectile dysfunction in adult men. It is a PDE5 inhibitor taken as a tablet before sexual activity. The usual starting dose is 50 mg and the 100 mg tablet is the highest dose. Viagra is not indicated for use in women.
Take Viagra (sildenafil) by mouth about 1 hour before sexual activity, anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours before. Do not take it more than once a day. Your healthcare provider may adjust the dose between 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. A high-fat meal can slow how fast it starts to work.
Common Viagra (sildenafil) side effects are headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, abnormal vision, back pain, dizziness and rash. Get emergency help for an erection lasting over 4 hours, sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, or sudden hearing loss. There is no boxed warning.
Never take Viagra (sildenafil) with nitrates in any form or with riociguat, because your blood pressure can fall too low. Ritonavir, some antifungals, alpha-blockers and blood pressure tablets need dose care. Do not combine Viagra with other erectile dysfunction treatments.
You can take Viagra (sildenafil) with food, but a high-fat meal slows how quickly it works. Moderate alcohol did not add to blood pressure lowering in the label studies. Take no more than one dose in 24 hours, and check with your healthcare provider before combining Viagra with any blood pressure medicine.
Your healthcare provider should check your heart health before you take Viagra (sildenafil), because sexual activity strains the heart. Stop and get emergency help for chest pain, dizziness or nausea during sex. An erection lasting over 4 hours, or sudden vision or hearing loss, also needs urgent care.
