Indications & Clinical Uses
- Vyzulta 0.024% eye drops (the catalogue lists 0.02%; the label strength is 0.024%, or 0.24 mg/mL) contain latanoprostene bunod, a prostaglandin analog.
- They are used to reduce raised pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
- The dose is one drop in the affected eye or eyes once daily in the evening.
- It is a self-administered eye drop.
- The label does not recommend use in patients under 16 years because of concerns about increased pigmentation with long-term use.
- If you use other eye drops, apply each at least 5 minutes apart.
- Information here comes from the US label; the US label holder is Bausch & Lomb Americas Inc.
Side Effects
- The most common side effects, in at least 2% of patients, are conjunctival hyperemia or eye redness (6%), eye irritation (4%), eye pain (3%) and pain when the drop is put in (2%).
- Vyzulta can gradually darken the iris and the skin around the eye, and iris colour change is likely to be permanent; eyelid darkening and changes to eyelashes (longer, thicker and more numerous) usually reverse when treatment stops.
- Intraocular inflammation and macular oedema can occur.
- The label has no boxed warning.
- See an eye specialist if you develop eye pain, marked redness, vision changes or discharge, or an eye infection.
Precautions & Warnings
- Iris pigmentation changes may be permanent, so tell your healthcare provider if only one eye is being treated.
- Use with caution if you have a history of iritis or uveitis, and in aphakic or pseudophakic patients because of macular oedema.
- Contaminated eye drops can cause bacterial keratitis, so never let the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface.
- Vyzulta contains benzalkonium chloride 0.2 mg/mL, so remove contact lenses before use and reinsert them after 15 minutes.
- There are no human pregnancy data, and rabbit studies showed fetal harm at low multiples of the human dose; breastfeeding effects are unknown.
- Store unopened bottles at 2°C to 8°C; once opened, keep at 2°C to 25°C and use within 8 weeks.
Avoid Interactions
- Increase effect or toxicity: the label lists no contraindications and documents no specific drug interactions.
- Reduce efficacy: no interacting medicines are named.
- Other eye medicines should be applied at least 5 minutes apart from Vyzulta so that one does not wash out the other.
- Contact lenses should be removed before instilling and put back after 15 minutes because of the benzalkonium chloride preservative.
- Tell your healthcare provider and eye specialist about all eye drops, other medicines and supplements you use, including any other prostaglandin eye drops, so that duplicate or overlapping treatment can be avoided.
- Never share the bottle with another person, since this raises the risk of eye infection and contamination.
